<p><a href="http://wwhttp://www.etsy.com/listing/87264749/2012-calendar-wild-edibles-watercolor?ref=v1_other_1w.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2012-Feb1.jpg" rel="lightbox[3199]" title="2012-Feb1"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3205" title="2012-Feb1" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2012-Feb1.jpg" alt="2012-Feb1" width="474" height="383" /></a></p>
<p>For me, my favorite favorite most amazing thing in 2011 was beginning to have conversations with my little one. For reals, she&#8217;s a PERSON with THOUGHTS and feelings and dreams and joys and hurts and questions questions questions. It&#8217;s so amazing to finally be able to hear all about them. She&#8217;s still working on her sentence structure (&#8221;does I have a sister?&#8221; was the best question yesterday. My answer? &#8220;no, you don&#8217;t have a sister&#8221; and her reply was &#8220;no, I don&#8217;t. She&#8217;s at work.&#8221; Hah! I guess &#8220;work&#8221; is where people are when you can&#8217;t see them? Pretty good).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/87264749/2012-calendar-wild-edibles-watercolor?ref=v1_other_1"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3206" title="2012-Jan2" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2012-Jan2.jpg" alt="2012-Jan2" width="576" height="383" /></a></p>
<p>And what are we looking forward to in 2012? All sorts of big things. Growing my business in ways I have only dreamed of. Making real plans, accountability, scheming and ACTING on these plans! Yes, so I suppose what I&#8217;m looking forward to in 2012 is <strong>action</strong>! Last year was a looking-inward hibernating sort of year, just reveling in our little family life and developing a rhythm to that. This year we&#8217;re adding to that rhythm and it already feels really good. Yay 2012!</p>
<p><em>**update: the winner is Samantha! Congrats and thanks to all of you for playing along!**</em></p>

<p>things i&#8217;m thinking about today, things I have been meaning to post about, things I will maybe someday devote entire posts to:</p>
<p>• FALL!</p>
<p>• editing Natalie&#8217;s birth story to post for you</p>
<p>• finally making a before/after post for our basement renovation project</p>
<p>• food &#8212; specifically introducing solid foods to an infant. And the school lunch program and our nation&#8217;s epidemic of STUPID when it comes to nutrition. Including our Doctors. I love our new pediatrician, though, who told me &#8220;meat is overrated&#8221; when I asked if I had to think about making sure our wee babe got enough protein when she&#8217;s finally eating solid foods. I kind of wanted to hug him.</p>
<p>• Naps. Or lack thereof. Natalie is a classic &#8220;nap resister&#8221; who doesn&#8217;t want to miss anything. <a title="The No-Cry Nap Solution" href="http://www.pantley.com/elizabeth/books/007159695X.php" target="_self">The No-Cry Nap Solution</a> is helping, though.</p>
<p>• Elimination Communication, AKA &#8220;<a title="The Diaper-Free Baby" href="http://www.diaperfreebaby.org/" target="_self">The Diaper-Free Bab</a>y&#8221;. This is a whole series of posts-worth of content, but let&#8217;s just say I&#8217;m getting over the feeling of being CRAZY for wanting to try this, and really enjoying the JOY on N&#8217;s face when she uses her tiny potty. SHE LOVES IT. I AM NOT CRAZY. And yes, she is not quite even 5 months old.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/DSC_0033.JPG" rel="lightbox[2175]" title="DSC_0033"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2176" title="DSC_0033" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/DSC_0033.JPG" alt="DSC_0033" width="443" height="295" /></a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I don&#8217;t have a lot of time, so I&#8217;ll keep it short and sweet. A list will do!</p>
<p>1. turns out I love being a mama. YAY! (not that I doubted that I would, but I&#8217;m pretty glad that I do.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/4th.jpg" rel="lightbox[2125]" title="4th"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2127" title="4th" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/4th.jpg" alt="4th" width="346" height="420" /></a><br />
2. a tree fell in our backyard 2 nights ago. crazy, right?</p>
<p>3. my aunt moved her shop to an amazing new space! It&#8217;s called <a title="Ikonium Studio" href="http://ikoniumstudio.blogspot.com/" target="_self">Ikonium Studio</a> and it&#8217;s at 69 Church Street in Lenox, MA &#8212; Go visit! There you will find contemporary and traditional Turkish and American fiber art and craft, amazing Turkish rugs, as well as some fantastic paintings and a few things made by other crafty folks and yours truly.</p>
<p>4. I&#8217;m doing a show in 2  weeks! I haven&#8217;t really gotten back to work yet (still resisting, enjoying &#8220;maternity leave&#8221;!) but I have to. Today. The show is sponsored by <a title="BerkshireMade" href="http://www.berkshiremade.org/" target="_self">BerkshireMade</a>; Handmade in the Park, downtown Lee, MA, Saturday August 7, 10am &#8211; 4pm.<br />
<a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tomatoes.jpg" rel="lightbox[2125]" title="tomatoes"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2126" title="tomatoes" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tomatoes.jpg" alt="tomatoes" width="383" height="576" /></a></p>
<p>5. tomatoes! summer! swimming!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/hands.jpg" rel="lightbox[2125]" title="hands"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2128" title="hands" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/hands.jpg" alt="hands" width="346" height="259" /></a></p>
<p>6. I am told our miss Natalie is very &#8220;advanced&#8221; &#8212; large for her age (10 weeks!), but also strong, smiley from day one and super talkative for weeks now. Also sleeping a lot, but I wont get into that, for fear of being stoned by other sleep-deprived mamas.</p>

<p>7. did I mention summer? With that comes weddings (that we have missed, boo!) and visits from friends and family, barbecues, birthdays of some of my favorite people, craft fairs (I&#8217;m only doing one, but you better be visiting lots!), farmer&#8217;s markets, tag sales (no, haven&#8217;t been to any, but we will), vacations (maybe next year?), and the <a title="Berkshire Fringe" href="http://www.berkshirefringe.com" target="_self">Berkshire Fringe</a> (starts next week!)!</p>
<p>Yay, Summer!</p>

<p>Hah, I really can&#8217;t even call it a harvest, our largest carrot was about 3 inches long, and it was by far the largest &#8212; many weighing in at a few centimeters, and the largest beet was about 2 inches in diameter, the rest about 1/2 inch. But, I patiently cleaned and chopped the bunch of them for dinner last night, and they were tasty {added to some potatoes, parsnips and carrots from our first <a title="Berkshrie Organics" href="http://berkshireorganics.com/" target="_self">Berkshire Organics</a> box, that is}.</p>
<p>Normally I would listen to my mother&#8217;s advice and leave them in the ground until after the first frost (tonight?), to add some sweetness to the roots. But this year I had to get &#8216;em out sooner, because the plot where they were planted was all part of the big landscaping project (remember <a title="LCD: Our Peaceable Kingdon" href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/2009/09/our-peaceable-kingdom-now-with-a-moat/" target="_self">Operation Rain out of the Basement</a>? It&#8217;s about done, I&#8217;ll show you soon!). There are some grass seeds there, now trying their best to sprout before the long winter.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sunflower1.jpg" rel="lightbox[1787]" title="<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1793" title="sunflower2" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sunflower2.jpg" alt="sunflower2" width="461" height="306" />"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1794" title="sunflower1" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sunflower1.jpg" alt="sunflower1" width="461" height="306" /></a><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sunflower2.jpg" rel="lightbox[1787]" title="sunflower2"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1793" title="sunflower2" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sunflower2.jpg" alt="sunflower2" width="461" height="306" /></a></p>
<p>I also had to cut these bad boys down, to make room for landscaping. These three were all that came of an entire package of seeds, though I have to say that bottom sunflower was mighty impressive. Dinner-plate-size!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/appleTree.jpg" rel="lightbox[1787]" title="appleTree"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1790" title="appleTree" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/appleTree.jpg" alt="appleTree" width="461" height="306" /></a></p>
<p>I got to go apple-picking with some of my favorite folks, too. A perfect fall-in-new-england activity.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/apples_pears.jpg" rel="lightbox[1787]" title="apples_pears"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1789" title="apples_pears" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/apples_pears.jpg" alt="apples_pears" width="461" height="306" /></a></p>
<p>This lineup is a few of my apple-picking finds, plus some pears, apples and plums from the afore-mentioned <a title="Berkshrie Organics" href="http://berkshireorganics.com/" target="_self">Berkshire Organics </a>box. Not sure how often we&#8217;ll have a delivery from them, but I&#8217;m thinking every other week will keep us eating well through the winter. I missed visiting a CSA this summer, and being forced to cook something healthy with all that produce that I didn&#8217;t even pick out myself. Having to look up recipes and try new things, it&#8217;s really one of the best ways to learn to cook, don&#8217;t you think?</p>

<p>Well, the idea is that we will NOT have a moat, at least not one full of water. My dad decided this weekend was finally time to work on a project we had been talking about for years; we&#8217;ll call it &#8220;Operation Water-Out-of-the-Basement, Part 1&#8243;.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/theWall_9.09.jpg" rel="lightbox[1765]" title="theWall_9.09"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1766" title="theWall_9.09" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/theWall_9.09.jpg" alt="theWall_9.09" width="504" height="335" /></a></p>
<p>We now have a new wall! A wall to keep the water out. We are still getting used to the looks of it, because it is right outside our front door, but I think after the first rainstorm we&#8217;ll be blessing it with everything we can think of, thanking it for holding out the flood.  After this worst-rain-ever summer, and after having inches of water in our basement &#8212; we have stone foundation, well, half of one, the other half is wood and windows and lovely walk-out-basement niceness &#8212; we were about ready for drastic action. I thought about kayaking around in the basement, maybe selling tickets, but I think this is a better solution.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/theWall_9.09-03.jpg" rel="lightbox[1765]" title="theWall_9.09-03"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1767" title="theWall_9.09-03" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/theWall_9.09-03.jpg" alt="theWall_9.09-03" width="504" height="335" /></a>It was quite a weekend&#8217;s work, though. I can&#8217;t say I envied John and my dad and my brother Brian, who came in for my mom&#8217;s Birthday and was treated to some wall-building and stone-schlepping for the day. (Thanks, Bri! and Sarah &#8212; up there in the shadows!) The excavator made an appearance and all of our neighbors were stopping by to see what the heck we were doing.</p>
<p>My mom, the expert gardener herself, came over today to assess the situation and come up with a plan for &#8217;softening&#8217; the look of the wall, and to integrate the whole thing into some kind of landscape plan. I&#8217;m excited to see what she comes up with, as I&#8217;m truthfully feeling a little daunted by the whole project.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/goats_fromAbove_9.09.jpg" rel="lightbox[1765]" title="goats_fromAbove_9.09"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1769" title="goats_fromAbove_9.09" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/goats_fromAbove_9.09.jpg" alt="goats_fromAbove_9.09" width="504" height="376" /></a></p>
<p>In other news, we only have two chickens now, down from three. sadness.</p>
<p>They have been escaping their pen lately (that they share with the goats), apparently not content to stand on goat backs for fun anymore. Sadly, this allows them to be in the yard without us knowing, and when we send Happy out for her walkabout within her electric-doggy-fence yard, she is also in perfect proximity to chase, and perhaps catch, a chicken. {You can&#8217;t blame a dog for acting on her instincts, right?}</p>
<p>We had an incident a week or so ago, where the chicken escaped with only some feathers missing, after we heard the commotion and managed to grab the dog and corral the chicken back into the pen. This last time, we were not so quick. The chicken lady was ok and walking after the incident, but must have sustained some kind of unseen injury, because we found her motionless the next morning. So sad. We are actively working on reinforcing the fence to keep the ladies in, and of course not letting the dog out unless we KNOW there are no chickens out. You&#8217;d think they&#8217;d learn their lesson and not want to get out again, but&#8230;. no.</p>
<p>So right now, though, our wall stands tall and strong against any rain coming its way, and our dog sleeps soundly on the couch while the chickens and goats graze safely in their pen. All is peaceful today. I hope it stays that way for a little while.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I&#8217;ve been reminded these last few days (wherein we have not had perpetual rainstorms, as the rest of the summer), why we are so lucky to live here, why hordes of tourists visit our fair Berkshire Hills each and every summer, why we indeed <em>chose</em> to live here. It&#8217;s gorgeous. and amazing. and awe-inspiring. love. it. so. much.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1612" title="SturgeonMoon_8.06" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/SturgeonMoon_8.06.jpg" alt="SturgeonMoon_8.06" width="430" height="293" /></p>
<p>I went kayaking in a little pond not too far from here at sunset with John and his dad yesterday, and then we stayed out on the lake under the full Sturgeon Moon until it got too cold to stay. It was so gorgeous. I can&#8217;t even really describe it, that&#8217;s how gorgeous it was. (er, &#8220;Sturgeon Moon&#8221; has something to do with the fish being very numerous around this time of year. Or something.)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1613" title="Rudbeckia" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Rudbekia.jpg" alt="Rudbekia" width="430" height="286" /></p>
<p>And my garden is growing. Finally. We&#8217;ve even enjoyed some home-grown tomatoes. They are very small, but very tasty and even red, to boot!<br />
<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1611" title="Rudbeckia_meadowRue_hosta" src="http://www.lauriecoyledesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Rudbekia_meadowRue_hosta.jpg" alt="Rudbeckia_meadowRue_hosta" width="383" height="576" /></p>
<p>This is the scene on my kitchen table today. The Meadow Rue (little purple flowers in big sprays) were tipping over in the garden, so I decided the flowers would be happier on the table and the plants would be happier without all that weight. The yellow is <a title="Wiki Rudbeckia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudbeckia" target="_self">Rudbeckia</a> and the other purple stem is a <a title="Wiki Hosta" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosta" target="_self">Hosta</a> flower, along with its own huge lime green leaf. These are all transplants from my mom&#8217;s amazing garden. I am so in love with each and every one, and I&#8217;m planning to fill every space I find next year with more Rudbeckia, plus maybe more daisies and some bee-balm. {also, those are some of my favorite <a title="Ana Candles" href="http://www.anacandles.com/" target="_self">Ana candles</a>}</p>
